Brown was killed in action during a raid on the German trenches at Houplines by the 37th Battalion on 28 January 1917. The wire was not cut and casualties were heavy, the enemy machine guns opened fire whilst the raiders were trying to get over the wire and they did not get into the enemy trenches. Edward Brown was missing after the raid. 13 men from the unit were killed during this raid.

His mother stated on his roll of honour form "He was of a very quiet, unassuming nature, also very sober and industrious."

Son of John Francis and Annie Brown, of Ovens Vale, Bright, Vic.

Died for His Country.
PRIVATE E. J. BROWN.
It will be remembered that some time ago Private E. J. Brown, son of Mr and Mrs J. Brown, of Ovens Vale, had been reported as missing. On Wednesday evening the Rev. G.  Brammall received a telegram from the Defence Department that Private Brown had been killed in action on 19th January last. Private Brown was a well-known resident of Ovens  Vale, where his people have resided for many years The deepest sympathy has been expressed for his parents in their sad bereavement. Mr Brammall immediately telephoned the information to the clergyman at Myrtleford, who broke the sad news to the parents. The flag at the Shire Hall was flown at half mast on Thursday, in honor of the departed hero.
