Death Of Mail Driver Of Early Days
JAMES OSBORNE MORRISON
On Sunday, March 26, a large gathering attended at the Happy Valley Cemetery to pay their last respects to the late James Osborne Morrison, whose remains were laid to rest that afternoon, the deceased gentleman having passed away in the early hours of that morning. In recognition of long service with the A.I.F. in the Great War of 1914-18, the coffin was draped with the Union Jack, while a large number of comrades of the Returned Soldiers' League were present, together with many friends representing the Waterside Workers' Association. The service was con ducted by Rev. A. H. White, rector of St. Thomas, Port Lincoln.
Mr. Morrison was born at Port Lincoln on February 26, 1871, and was the son of Scottish pioneers who came to South Australia in the early days. Noted for skill and judgment in all matters pertaining to horses. Mr. Morrison was for many years a well Known figure on the five horse coaches which, owned by the Mudge Bros., plied for many years on the road between Port Lincoln and Streaky Bay.
Soon after the outbreak of the war in August, 1914, Mr. Morrison enlisted in the 9th Light Horse and served in Egypt, Palestine and other parts of the Middle East until the cessation of hostilities. Returning, he was for a long time engaged in activities on the waterside.
A widow, three sons, three daughters, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild remain to mourn their loss.
