ASYLUM PATIENT'S
DEATH.
Coroner's Inquest Closed.
Further evidence in connection with the death of James Patrick Boody, a patient at the Sandy Gallop Mental Hospital, who died suddenly on December 10, 1934, was heard in the Coroner's Court yesterday morning at the adjourned inquest. Mr. C. D. O'Brien occupied the Bench, and Senior-Sergeant T. Smith examined the witnesses. Dennis Adrian Coman, a warder at the mental hospital, said he was instructed by Chief Warder Daye to transfer a patient named Boody from No. 2 male ward to the hospital ward. Witness and the patient started to walk to that ward, and he told Boody to sit in a lounge chair at the entrance. Witness called Nurse O'Brien to take charge of the patient, but by he time she got to him he appeared to have taken a turn and collapsed. Witness caught him and laid him on the chair in a comfortable position. Matron Cameron was advised, and she ordered that the patient be given a hypodermic injection of 1/40 gr. of strychnine. That was done, but the patient did not rally. He lived a couple of minutes after the injection. Boody was quiet and had not protested while being taken to the hospital ward. He had been given every attention, and there was noting suspicious in connection with his death. Normally he was of a quiet disposition. Corroborative evidence was given by Nurse O'Brien, who said she prepared the strychnine, and when the matron ordered it to be administered, she made the injection. Constable J. R. Wade said he made inquiries in connection with the matter, and as a result he was of the opinion that Boody died of natural causes. He was not interfered with by any other patient, and it was not through carelessness on the part of the staff that his death had occurred. There was no suspicion of foul play. The evidence shows that the patient received proper care and attention and the certificate of death shows that the patient's death was the result of his physical state remarked the Coroner.
The certificate of death showed that the death was caused by heart failure. The inquest was closed.
