'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He displayed the greatest gallantry in repairing and maintaining communication under very heavy fire.'

Noel Holmes went away with the first Australian troops as wireless officer of a troopship, but landed at Egypt, and subsequently joined the Engineers as signaller, being later  attached to the Light Horse, and finally transferred to France with a Howitzer Battery of Artillery, and it was whilst with this branch that he earned distinction, and is now in the Officers’ Cadet School in England training for a Commission. He is the only son of Captain A. Holmes, late A and I Staff, and nephew  of Major General W. Holmes, C.M.G. D.S.O., V.D., who is commanding a division in France, after having taken Kabaul and commanded a brigade in Gallipoli.
