"BAKER.— On the 5th of August, at a private hospital, Major Francis J. J. (Frank) Baker M.M. (late 10th Batt., First A.I.F.), of 173 Prospect rd., Prospect, and formerly of Barabba, beloved husband of Fanny Baker, and loving father of John, aged 46 years." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 07 Aug 1941 (nla.gov.au)

Francis Jephthah John Baker was born on February 15, 1895, in Forster, River Murray, South Australia.

His mother was Norma Baker (whom he wrote as his closest relative on his enlistment forms) and his father was Francis Henry Baker. His sibling were Murray Samuel Baker, Roy Benjamin David Baker, James Ebenezer Baker, Linda Dora Ann Baker. He married Naomi Good on 14 February 1894, in Alma, South Australia. As stated in his description upon enlistment, he had medium complexion, brown hair and blue eyes, his occupation was a Petrol Mechanic. He had 1 son

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force June 11, 1915, serving in the 27th and later the 10th Australian Infantry Battalions during World War I.

During his service in World War I, Francis Jephthah John Baker, like many Australian soldiers, passed through Egypt. He spent his 21st birthday there.

When he was in the 10th Battalion, at Hollebeke, he showed his courage by making brave actions included assisting his platoon commander in a reconnaissance mission under enemy fire in March 1918, during which he helped recover wounded soldiers.  For his achievement in combat, he was awarded the Military Medal.

Baker returned to Australia on 12 April 1919, then he moved to Prospect. He was discharged from the AIF 29 Jul 1919.

On August 5, 1941, at the age of 46, he passed due to illness. His passing marked the end of a life that had been distinguished by remarkable courage and unwavering dedication.
