Died on this date – 6th April…… Private Frank Dennis Alexander was born at Wacton, Long Stratton, Norfolk, England in 1882.
According to information provided by his mother for the Roll of Honour served with King’s Own Royal Regiment, Norfolk Imperial Yeomanry from 1st May, 1905 till 31st March, 1908.
Also in information provided for the Roll of Honour - Frank Dennis Alexander came to Australia when he was 31 years old.
Frank Dennis Alexander enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 4th September, 1915 as a 33 year old, single, Farmer from Bishopsthorpe, Goulburn, NSW.
On 31st March, 1916 Private Alexander embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on HMAT Star of Victoria (A16) with the 13th Infantry Battalion, 16th Reinforcements.
He embarked from Alexandria on 7th June, 1916 to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 14th June, 1916. He was taken on strength of 13th Battalion in France on 27th July, 1916 from 4th Divisional Base Depot at Etaples.
Private Alexander reported sick on 1st August, 1916 & was admitted to 8th Stationary Hospital at Wimereux on 5th August, 1916 with “A.C.T. Elbow” – right. He was transferred to 1st Convalescent Depot at Boulogne, France on 8th August, 1916 & discharged fit on 13th August, 1916 to Base.
On 24th August, 1916 Private Alexander was sent to 26th General Hospital from 4th Australian Divisional Base Depot at Etaples, France. He was transferred from 26th General Hospital to 24th General Hospital at Etaples on 4th September, 1916. He was listed with Enteric & he was progressing favourably on 10th September, 1916. Private Alexander was listed as seriously ill on 17th September, 1916 & again on 25th September, 1916. He embarked from England on Hospital Ship Brighton from Calais on 1st October, 1916 with Pyelo - Nephritis.
He was admitted to Northern General Hospital at Leicester, England on 1st October, 1916. He was taken off Seriously Ill List on 2nd October, 1916 (Neuritis). Private Alexander was transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford on 6th December, 1916 with Nephritis. He was discharged to furlough from 8th January, 1917 to 23rd January, 1917.
Private Alexander was marched in to No. 4 Command Depot at Wareham, Dorset from furlough.
He was sent sick to Wareham Military Hospital on 26th February, 1917 & admitted later that day with Tuberculosis – seriously ill.
Private Frank Dennis Alexander died on 6th April, 1917 at Long Stratton Hospital, Norfolk, England from Tuberculosis.
He was buried on 11th April, 1917 in St. Mary’s Churchyard, Stratton, Norfolk, England (North of Church) & has a Private Headstone. His death is still acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
From the burial report of Private Alexander - Coffin was Oak with plain brass Plate. The relatives did not intend to erect a memorial until after the War. “My son expressed the wish to have the following put on his cross:-
13th Batt., Australian Imperial Army.
GOD BE MERCIFUL TO ME A SINNER.”
