Biography

Harry joined the 20th Battalion 17th Reinforcements on 3rd July 1916. The unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAS A11 Ascanius on 25 October 1916. He disembarked at Devonport on 28 December 1916. He went to France where he reported sink on 18 July 1917. He embarked for England and was admitted to the University War Hospital in Southampton. He returned to Australia on 31 October 1917.

Harry rejoined the army on 10 April 1918 in the Army Medical Corp and left for overseas on board RMS Osterley on 8 May 1918. He served on hospital ships and in hospitals in England. He returned home on 10 February 1919. His mother died on 12 August 1918 whilst he was still overseas.

Harry was born as Harold Ernest Owen Farquharson.

Mother Alice Farquharson married Edward Lloyd Horton in 1897.

Harold adopted his step-fathers name ('Horton'), and Mother Alice Horton (nee Farquaharson),
living at 51 Marshall Street, Moore Park, NSW.

In 1917, the 20th was involved in one of four battalions to defeat a counter-stroke by a German force, almost five times as strong, at Lagnicourt. The Battalion took part in the battle at Bullecourt in France.
