Bill was the eldest of thirteen children of John (Jack) Ellis (born 1863 in Busselton, WA) and Mary Angela Moriarty (born 1872 at Ludlow, WA). Jack (a Farmer) and Mary married  in 1892 in Busselton, WA.

Bill was a Farmer at 'Pericles' in Augusta, WA when he enlisted in the AIF in May 1915. He served as a Private (Service No:1319) with 10th Light Horse Regiment, 3rd Light Horse Regiment, 70th and 11th Infantry Battalions and was Discharged in August 1919.

Returning to Augusta to farm at 'Pericles', in 1921 Bill married Katherine (Katie) Mary Brennan (born 1899 in Boranup, WA in Perth, WA. Katie was a Waitress working in Albany, WA. Bill and Katie settled at 'Pericles' in Augusta,  WA where Bill was a Farmer. They separated in 1942 and Katie moved to Collie, WA where she worked as a Cook.

In June 1942 Bill enlisted in the ACMF and was a Private (Service No:W82156) attached to 5 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps when he was Discharged in 1945. Eldest son William James Ellis (Lieutenant; Service No:WX22798) also served in WWII.

Bill continued to farm in Augusta, WA - for many years with son Raymond John, and died in 1972.
