Served and suffered during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
98 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 7th November 1925, Private George Donald, 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital (Nursing Staff, Reg No-2016), ironmonger and chemist's assistant (Robert Campbell Donald, Hamilton, N.S.W.), from Tudor Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and Park and Lawson Streets, Hamilton South, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 28. PRESBYTERIAN-5SE. 4.
Born at Hamilton, New South Wales on the 25th May 1897 to Richard, died 11.10.1899, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 39, of Lindsay Street, Hamilton Park, N.S.W., PRESBYTERIAN-5SE.2 and Frances M Donald, died 19.6.1917, Annandale, N.S.W., George enlisted on the 5th September 1915 with the 30th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A70 Ballarat on the 16th February 1916.
Admitted to the 15th Australian Field Ambulance 26.4.1916 (bronchitis).
Admitted to hospital 6.12.1916 (trench feet), 16.3.1919 (osteomyelitis, infection of the bone).
Wounded in action - 24.11.1916 (GSW left shin, fractured leg).
George returned home on the 24th July 1919, being discharged on the 13th October 1919.
Mr. Donald’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor, Scotts Kirk (Hamilton) Roll of Honour and the Hamilton Mechanics' Institute Roll of Honour. Name would be inscribed on the Hamilton Central League Football Club Roll of Honour (whereabouts unknown).
The tragic circumstances of George’s death were reported.
Report of funeral for George (see link) mentions that he had died from injuries received in a motor accident in Hunter Street, Newcastle, N.S.W. on the Thursday night of the 5th? November 1925.
I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at George’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Cousin John Beeston Donald (also known as Jack, son of Robert Campbell (died 1932) and Elizabeth Janet Donald (died 1940), born 4.10.1899, Hamilton, New South Wales, pharmacy student (clerk), from "Dumferline", Tudor Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, enlisted 25.7.1917, 17th Battalion, Reg No-7037, Died of Wounds at 8.30 A.M. on the 24.5.1918 at the 47th Casualty Clearing Station, (machine gun bullet through the neck), Morlancourt, France, age 18 years 7 months, resting at Crouy British Cemetery, Crouy-Sur-Somme, France. Plot II Row C Grave 21) memorialised same location.
