Edward James Briggs was the son of William and Priscilla Ruth Briggs of Port Broughton. He was born at Port Broughton in 1899. A labourer, he was 18 years old when he enlisted on 18 August 1917.
Edward was appointed to 8th Reinforcements 43rd Battalion and embarked from Melbourne aboard SS Ormonde on 6 March 1918. Bound for England the ship passed through the Suez Canal where Edward, suffering from bronchitis, was taken off the ship. He was evacuated to hospital and three months later transferred to Hospital Transport “Port Darwin” that sailed for Australia on 12 July 1918. He arrived in Sydney on 17 August and was discharged on 4 November 1918.
