Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board
John Gell was born on 24 Sept 1887 at Didsbury, Manchester, England. He first worked for the NSW Tramways in July 1911 as a conductor in Sydney. After six months he resigned but worked in the same job again in 1913 and became permanent in 1914. In September1914 he was given leave to join the Expeditionary Forces.
He was posted missing after a charge at the Battle of Lone Pine between 6 and 9 August. At a Court of Enquiry, held in France in April 1916 it was resolved that he had in fact been killed in action. His body was never recovered, and he is remembered on the memorial at Lone Pine.

John Gell,was born on 24th Sept 1887 at Didsbury, Manchester, England. He first worked for the NSW Tramways in July 1911 as a conductor in Sydney. After six months he resigned but worked in the same job again in 1913 and became permanent in 1914. In September1914 he was given leave to join the Expeditionary Forces.
He enlisted in the AIF at Kensington in October and was allotted to the 4th Australian Infantry Battalion. Gell was unmarried and gave his father as his next of kin. He left Australia from Sydney on 20th October 1914 onboard HMAT ‘Euripides’. After further training in Egypt he embarked at Alexandria onboard ‘Lake Michigan’ on 5th April 1915. He went to Gallipoli where he landed on Anzac Day or soon after. He was wounded on 19th May and taken to Egypt for treatment and convalescence
