"...1154 Trooper Bute Alfred Charters, 12th Light Horse Regiment (LHR), of Bingara, NSW. The seventh of 15 children and a grazier prior to enlisting in October 1915, Bute Charters, embarked from Sydney with the 12th Light Horse Regiment aboard SS Hawkes Bay on 21 October 1915. He was appointed Lance Corporal (L Cpl) in March 1917. L Cpl Charters was killed in action during the Attack on Beersheba, Palestine, on 31 October 1917, aged 28."- SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
"Death of a Gallant Man.
Trooper B. A. Charters, who has been fighting with the Australian troops in Egypt, was killed in action in Palestine on Oct 13th. He enlisted three years ago, but as he was suffering from an internal complaint, he was discharged. Being successfully operated upon, he again joined up, but being attacked with pneumonia, was again discharged. Later he once more re-enlisted, and as he, with others of his troop, were riding to the transport to embark, his horse fell, resulting in his rider's leg being broken. Three months sufficed to place him on his feet again, and he re-enlisted for the last time, sailing as reinforcements of the 13th Light Horse. He arrived early in Egypt, and fought in that place and Palestine with his squadron for some time, eventually being killed as already mentioned. He was the fifth son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Charters, of Hill End, Bingara. The deceased gallant soldier was a brother of Mr. R. Charters, of Kilgowla, and Messrs. D. and F.
