Stewy was cremated at Woongarra Crematorium in Townsville. Part of his ashes are interred at Woongarra, while the remainder were returned to Edinburgh, Scotland by his good friend, Steve Saville, where they were scattered in a public park. Permission for the last remaining member of Stewy's family, his estranged brother, the infamous Tommy McCulloch (www.scotsman.com) serving a life sentence, to attend, was granted by the prison authorities in Scotland. Tommy chose not to take the short day-time leave of absence to avoid the gaze of any media who might get wind of it. Tommy hadn't seen his older brother for over 30 years.
Stewy lived the final 30 years of his life in Townsville. He retired due to ill-health from the Prison Service after 20 years in 1997.
Stewy is commemorated on the Wall of Remembrance at Townsville's ANZAC Strand Park Memorial.
