Anthony George Eldridge was one of three brothers who enlisted for service in the Great War, the other two being Clifton Charles and Jack Hastings Eldridge. They all survived the war.
After enlistment in February Anthony was assigned to the 27th Battalion and after completion of basic training he embarked with the main body of the Battalion from Outer Harbour on May 31st 1915, aboard HMAT Geelong A2.
The Battalion disembarked in Egypt for additional training and preparation for landing at ANZAC.
After landing at Gallipoli in September and surviving almost to the withdrawal / evacuation, Anthony Eldridge found himself in hospital after a diagnosis of jaundice in December 1915. He did not rejoin the unit until March by which time the unit was preparing for embarkation to France.
After the initial period of familiarisation and some skirmishing in the Armentieres Sector the Battalion began the move south to the Somme via Messines and a brisk action there. By late July they were in the Somme and shortly after the Second Division was heavily engaged at Pozieres, where Anthony Eldridge was mentioned for good and gallant conduct during the fighting at Pozieres and recommended for a Military Medal.
He was promoted to Temporary Corporal while the battalion was engaged at Mouquet Farm on the 5th August 1916
He was wounded on 16th November 1916 , after the 27th's action at Flers but while in winter quarters near Guedecourt. Concurrently he was promoted to Sergeant but reverted to Corporal when he was evacuated to England for treatment of the gunshot wound to the upper arm that he sustained.
After recovery he was assigned to the Instructional School for training and subsequent employment as an instructor from April 1917 at Perham Downs Portsmouth and Sutton Veny.
From 14th December 1917, Anthony Eldridge transferred to the Provost Corps (Military Police) at Tidworth Barracks where he remained for the duration of the war. He was promoted to Sergeant in September 1918
