Carl Stanley Bertranm, known as Stan, enlisted aged 19 on the 3rd May 1915 and was assigned to the Australian Medical Corps, 1st Reinforcements for the 3rd General Hospital, with whom he embarked barely a month laterr from Melbourne on Board the HMAT Wandilla barely a month later.
He served in the Hospital on Lemnos island at Mudros in early August 1915 after embarking on the 'Saturnia' from ALexandria in late July 1915.
He served there until emabraking on the 'Oxfordshire', a hospital ship, for Alexandria inlate December early January 1917.
until September 1917 when he embarked fro Europe on the HMAT Karoola ex Alexandria.
In late 1917 he was selected for Officer training and was sent to the officer training school in the UK in August 1917.
He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant from 1st December 1917. He was initially assigned to the 25th Battalion on 29th December 1917 and where he was promoted to Lieutenant on the 25th March 1918.
During this time the 25th Battalion fouught to turn back the German spring offensive in April, and then participated in battles at Morlancourt, Hamel, Amiens and along the Somme Valley.
Stan was wounded in action on the 10th June 1918 - described as a gunshot wound (GSW) to the left leg - severe. He was evacuatred to England and returned to the 25th Battalion on the 25th August 1918.
The Hundred Days offensive further sapped the strength of the AIF, already under-strength due to earlier casualties and lack of reinforcements. In September, following the fighting at Beaurevoir on the Hindenburg Line, the 25th was one of several battalions ordered to disband to reinforce others. Its troops mutinied, winning the Battalion a temporary reprieve. But Stan was posted; briefly to the 26th Battalion on the 19th October (by which time the Australian Corps was largely in Reserve and then to the 27th on the 6th November within a week of hte war's end, and where he served out the remainder of his time
Stan was moved to the UK for return to Australia in January 1919 and returned to Australia on the ' Euripides'.
He was corresponding with Central Army Records Office in Melbourne as at March 1967. seeking the issue of the Gallipoli medallion and badge issued at that time, based on his service at Mudros which was part of the declared area of operations. At the time he lived at No 3 Boskena Court, Jessie Road Kensington Park
