Alan's parents were John Tanner and Matilda Eleanor Berry who farmed at Whiteside. Alan attended North Pine State School with his two brothers Leslie [1050] and Owen [3024] both of whom enlisted in the war. Alan enlisted 19 November 1915 at Brisbane. He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant on 18 December 1918
The war had ended by this time. He married Violet Marguerita Chow 5 March 1921, they lived in Toowong and Alan's occupation was a clerk. All three brothers returned home.
