Son of Walter Fleetwood Varley and Bertha Varley nee Tozer of Bridge Road, Richmond, Victoria.
Commenced return to Australia on 8 October 1918 from Taranto, Italy aboard HT Kaiser-a-Hind then transhipped aboard HT Port Sydney disembarking on 2 December 1918
