When WW1 broke out Bill joined the 1st Battalion 9th Reinforcement. He felt a strong sense of duty .

After serving in Gallipoli, he attended signalling school, then was transfered to the 53rd Battalion .

Whilst fighting in France, he was shot and sustained serious wounds to his left arm. Bill was no longer fit for service and returned to Australia on the 13.3.18.
