Jock entered Puckapunyal recruit training on the 4th October 1967, 10th Intake A Coy. In Jan 68 moved to Infantry Corp training at Singleton 23 Platoon.
He left Singleton for Woodside, 9RAR had been formed 13th November 1967 to be deployed to South Vietnam November 1968. Posted to A Coy 1 Platoon 2 Section, serving the rest of my time in the same section as forward scout. 10th Intake were getting discharged Oct 69 so came home on 3 flights, I was going to sign on to finish the tour with the Battalion as A Coy driver. Unfortunately or fortunately he got in a bit of strife & decide it would be better to come home on the last 10th Intake flight arriving back in Adelaide 31st August 69. The Battalion arrived in Vietnam on its 1st Birthday 13th Nov 68.
After discharge he returned to work in banking but found it difficult to settle.
In1974 he joined Blackwood & District Sub-branch of RSL and this was the start of a long and distinguished career as an veterans advocate. A few highlights follow.
He held the positons of Committee Member, Treasurer Vice-President and President at the Blackwood RSL. He went on to be State Vice-President 1995 – 1997; Deputy State President 1997 –2003; Commissioner RSL Australian Forces Overseas Fund (RSL AFOF) 2004 and State President (SA, NT & Broken Hill) 2004 – 2012
He was a Foundation member of 9RAR SA Association. He was member and Deputy Chairman of the SA Veterans Advisory Council and Presiding Officer of the SA Veterans Health Advisory Council.
He held the position of Chairman, War Veterans Home (WVH), Myrtle Bank 2008 - Jan 2012 and then Inaugural Chairman, RSL Care SA, Jan 2012-2013 (Formerly WVH).
He has been awarded, Life Membership of The Returned & Services League of Australia 1994; the RSL Meritorious Service Medal July 2006; Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) For service to Veterans and their families, particularly through the South Australian Branch of The Returned & Service League of Australia” June 2003; was South Australian Finalist in Senior Australian of the Year 2013 adn was Awarded, Member of the Order of Australia (AM) January 2013 “For significant service to the Veteran Community of South Australia”
