The family/war grave at Wonthaggi Cemetery, Victoria of Allan, William “Billy” Jr.: 2221 Private 37th Battalion
Born in Bothwell, Scotland on 11 July 1889, and a miner by trade (Victorian State Coal Mine, Wonthaggi), he enlisted on 1 February 1916 and was sent to France. During this time, he was hospitalised and sent back to England in early 1917, suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis. His records state that it was due to active service, exposure and stress. He stayed there, until his return to Australia in early May 1917. His TB seems to have severely affected him, due to previous respiratory issues. He died at the Heidelberg Military Hospital on 4 October 1918 aged 29 years. He was buried at the Wonthaggi Cemetery, with his mother, who died three years previously.

Born in Bothwell, Scotland in about 1893, and a miner by trade (likely the Victorian State Coal Mine, Wonthaggi), he enlisted on 13 July 1915 and was sent to France via Egypt. He was killed in action on 11 December 1916 aged 23 years. He is buried in the Bernafay Wood British Cemetery on the Somme. His personal inscription reads: “SUNSHINE PASSES SHADOWS FALL LOVE & REMEMBRANCE OUTLAST ALL
