Larry Davenport was raised in Victor Harbor. After high school he attended Teachers College but realising he might never leave school, he became a stock and station agent.
Called up for National Service in 1967 he was allocated to Artillery.
After Corps training as a gunner he became a specialist sig. Posted initially to 105 Field Battery in 1 Field Regiment at Wacol, and then sent to South Vietnam as a reinforcement for 4 Field Regiment serving initially in Task Force HQ. He transferred to 12 Field Regiment as an Artillery Tac Sig.
Larry served at FSB Coral from 12th May - 6th June. As an artillery sig he had 'his ear to the action'.
As is often the case signallers and staff in Command Post get a good overview as complex events involving many elements unfold. Larry returned to Australia in October 1968 and resumed his stock and station agency job on discharge in February 1969.
These days he lives quietly in Victor Harbor, is married with three children, ten grand-children and a great grand-child. He is a volunteer with the Army Museum of South Australia.
