Son of Samuel John Lennard and Beatrice Amy (nee Brighton) Lennard of Penola Road, Naracoortle, SA; brother of Muriel Mary Lennard
Plane was Kittyhawk A29-919 which was crashed on Galela Bay beach, East Indies while on air operations. James was badly injured in the crash but managed to struggle ashore. Attempts by a flying boat to rescue him were prevented by heavy enemy corssfire
