Son of Edgar Norman and Laura Irene Tansell, of Cottonville, South Australia
Stoker 2nd Class Cyril Francis Tansell, HMAS Penguin, of Cottonville, SA was a refrigerator assembler before enlisting on 29 July 1941. He chose to join the Navy because his father had served in the Navy in the First World War. He joined the crew of HMAS Yarra on 3 January 1942, and was killed in action on 4 March 1942, at the age of 18, when the Yarra was sunk with the loss of 115 men.
Cyril Francis Tansell of the Yarra, said that he had "seen a little excitement on land and sea." He is aged 18, and one of the men posted missing. His parents live at Cottonville. Educated at West bourne Park School and Unley High School. he joined the navy last vear. His father, Mr. E. N. Tansell. served with the R.A.N. in World War I.
