Served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
89 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 1st October 1932 (6 funerals on this day), Private William George Barry, 30th Battalion (Reg No-2277), miner from Sawyers Gully Road, Sawyers Gully, New South Wales and Weston? N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 62. ANGLICAN 1-69. 103.
Born at Springdallah, Victoria on the 4th February 1870 to John Frost and Margaret Barry nee Holt (SNELL), William enlisted September 1915 (age 45!) at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 8.12.1916 (trench feet), William returned home December 1917, being discharged (overage) on the 19th January 1918.
Mr. Barry’s name has not been inscribed on the Sawyers Gully Memorial Gates or any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies at William’s gravesite in remembrance of this elderly Hero’s service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.
