He took up a position on the committee at Glenelg Sub Branch in 1946 and found himself elected to the State Board in 1947 to 1954 as a Vice President. From 1955 to 1960 he served as State President of RSL, while still holding that position he was appointed National President. This made him the first WW2 returned serviceman to be appointed to the position. He served on the Commonwealth Immigration Advisory Council and Chairman of the WW2 Services Welfare Fund (SA). Regional Chairman of Services Canteen Fund (SA). He was a member of the Committee of the War Veterans Home, Myrtle Bank and a Trustee of the Services Cemetery Trust of SA and also served on the Poppy Day Trust Fund. In 1959 he was made a Companion of the British Empire. and was Knighted in 1966. For his services to the RSL he was awarded its top honour of Life Membership in 1962. He came from a well known family of hoteliers and sportsmen. With this background he created the A J Lee Cup which was awarded to the Women's Auxiliary which raised the most money for the War Veterans Home each year.
