Son of Charles William John and Florence Isobel Fisher, of Point Pine, South Australia; husband of Yvonne Joyce Fisher, of Barmera, South Australia.
Educated at Port Pirie West Public school he took an interest in running and was fond of football, cricket and swimming. Enlisted in the RAN in July 1941, prior to this he was a Signaller in the 9th Light Horse.
