Died on this date – 2nd January…… Private William Angus Bull was born at North Wangaratta, Victoria. His birth was registered in 1887. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 13th March, 1916 as a 29 year old, single, Labourer from Tarrawingee P.O., Victoria.

Private William Angus Bull embarked from Port Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 25th September, 1916 with the 10th Infantry Brigade, 37th Infantry Battalion, 3rd Reinforcements & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 11th November, 1916.

He was marched in to 3rd D.A.T.B. (Divisional Amalgamated Training Battalion) Hurdcott, Wiltshire, England on 16th November, 1916 then marched out to 10th Training Battalion, Durrington, Wiltshire on 17th November, 1916.

On 24th December, 1916 Private Bull was sent sick to Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire with suspected Cerebro Spinal Meningitis. He was transferred to Tidworth Military Hospital on 25th December, 1916 with Cerebro Spinal Meningitis. Private Bull was reported to be dangerously ill on 26th December, 1916.

Private William Angus Bull died on 2nd* January, 1917 at Military Hospital, Tidworth, Wiltshire, England from Cerebro Spinal Meningitis.

(*Several forms in the Service Record file have the date of death incorrectly listed as 3rd January, 1917.)
Correspondence was sent from A.I.F. Administrative Headquarters, London on 28th June, 1917 to Base Records, Melbourne to advise that two deceased soldiers had the wrong dates of death on Army Forms sent: “Army Forms B.2090a were forwarded to you on the 8th instant for the above deceased soldiers, showing dates of death as “Bull 3/1/17” and “Minock 25/1/17”. The dates shown are incorrect and should read “Bull 2/1/17” and “Minock 27/1/17”…May the forms held by you be amended, please.”

Private William Angus Bull was buried on 5th January, 1917 in Tidworth Military Cemetery, Wiltshire, England – Plot number C. 242 and has a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone.

[NOTE: The date of death on the headstone of Private W. A. Bull is incorrect. It should be 2 January, 1917. CWGC were advised at the time of researching – May, 2021]
