Able-Seaman Douglas Sackfield Asplin, 20. is the only son of Mr and Mrs. J. S. Asplin. of Wattle street, Largs. He had been in the Perth during the evacuations of Greece and Crete. and was in the Battle of Matapan. He enlisted in the Navy when 18.
He was a keen yachtsman. Just before war broke out he built in his back yard the 12-footer Mercury, which, sailed by friends, won the championship of Largs Yacht ing Club last year. Educated at Largs Bay Public and Woodville High Schools, A.B. Asplin worked at Goode, Durrant & Murray's warehouse before the war.
