Son of Hubert Hurtle Shillabeer and Alice May (nee Kemp) Shillabeer; husband of Alice Adele Shillabeer of Mount Wedge, South Australia. Brother of Verna Lois Shillabeer, Keith Oswald Shillabeer (served with the 13 Field Regiment in PNG), Yvonne Elizabeth Shillabeer (served with AWAS) and Ronda Fanny Shillabeer

Neil carried out 100 sorties during which time he flew Hurricanes and Kittyhawks. He was reported missing while carrying out air operations near Mersa Matruh while flying a Kittyhawk
