I HEARD yesterday of a touching sequel to the tragic death by drowning in the River Murray at Mannum on Friday of 26-year-old J. C. Schofield, ex-RAAF, in the sight of his young wife while rescuing a dog. Mr. Schofield was associated with Sq-Ldr. Kirn Bonython as an air gunner over the Solomon Islands and the East Indies, for three years and the leader has always taken a keen interest in his crew.
Moreover, he and Mr. Schofield were married on the same day.
Yesterday was the third anniversary of their wedding. On Friday he tried to get in touch with the air gunner to send him a Christmas greeting telegraph, and was grieved to learn from Mr. Schofield's parents that he had been drowned that day.
