Peter Philip Adrian HOPTON DFC (1920-1977)
The Beaufort was captained by Pilot Flying Officer Peter Hopton, captain of a No. 7 Squadron Beaufort Bomber based at Horn Island on the tip of Cape York Peninsula, who was credited with the first enemy aircraft shot down by his squadron when on 26 June 1942, he and his crew shot down a Japanese Jake floatplane over Torres Strait on 26 June 1943. Hopton was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his courageous flying in the South-West Pacific Area. and who was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his courageous flying in the South-West Pacific Area.
