John Furness was born in South Australia. He was working as a Librarian at the Adelaide University Law Library. He initially enlisted in the Army (CMF) before transferring to the RAAF. John trained as a General Duties Navigator in Australia, Canada and UK before joining No. 15 Sqn (RAF) on Lancasters.
His aircraft (Lancaster HK626) was struck by flack over Oberhausen Germany. All crew members were killed.
