TRAINING CRASH KILLS PILOT


Pilot-Officer J. G. Crowe, of Franklin, South Australia, was killed when an aircraft crashed during training exercises in southern New South Wales.

Son of Henry George and Isabel Grace Crowe of Franklin, South Australia

He  was the Pilot of Kittyhawk aircraft A29-300 of Number 2 Operational Training Unit which crashed at the Gol Gol gunnery range.  When diving at the target Pilot Officer Crowe pulled out too late and the aircraft hit the ground on the flat of its belly became airborne again and spun in from a low height exploding on impact.

Kittyhawk aircraft A29-300 was allocated to 2 OTU in March 1943 - in April it suffered extensive damage when turning across the runway the tail wheel and then the port undercarriage retracted.
