Tributes flow for Latrobe's 'gentleman' Julian Minton-Connell
JULIAN Minton-Connell gave his all to the Latrobe Football Club and the community. Mr Minton-Connell died on Thursday at the age of 96.
Julian Minton-Connell, who died on Thursday aged 96, is remembered as someone who loved Latrobe and its football club.
Mr Minton-Connell was a life member of the Latrobe Football Club and a well respected member of the legal fraternity.
Latrobe Council Mayor Mike Gaffney said Mr Minton-Connell was "the perfect gentleman".
"I've never heard anyone say a bad word about Julian," he said.
"Even when he was much older and out of public life, he would pick up rubbish on his walks throughout town.
"That mightn't sound like much to some but it speaks volumes of his support for the town and the municipality."
Former Latrobe Football President Ian "Nobby" Broomhall said Mr Minton- Connell was incredibly supportive of the club.
A World War II veteran, Mr Minton-Connell had many roles at the club, including vicepresident, treasurer, committee member and Latrobe's NTFL delegate. Mr Minton-Connell helped to write Latrobe and the NTFL's constitution on multiple occasions, and represented Latrobe players as its legal representative at the tribunal whenever he was required. "He helped out the club whenever he could off his own bat and never charged a cent for his services," Mr Broomhall said.
Mr Broomhall said Mr Minton-Connell could be seen at Latrobe games following the club's fortunes up until two or three years ago.
"He was very important to the football club," Mr Broomhall said.
"As a president, it was great to have a good vice- president to rely on." Mr Broomhall said Mr Minton-Connell would be sorely missed by the entire Latrobe community.
"As a person, he was a gentleman and an upstanding member of Latrobe when he lived here," he said.
