Son of Mrs E KARCHER and the late H KARCHER of 21 George Street, St. Peters, SA. Educated at Christian Brothers' College Wakefiled Street Adelaide, he won an Old Scholars' Scholarship and Q.C. and then took the Intermediate exam. Playing football and cricket for his school, he excelled at handball and was a member of the Interstate Team playing as goal sneak, with a season's bag of 114 goals. In civilian life Henry was a Linotype operator at F.J. McAllister's and was called up in December 1941. He had previously won a Trade School scholarship and had served three months in the Militia.
