WAG Sergeant Ronald E. Obst was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J Obst of Adelaide. Mr. Obst was Sgt. R. E, Obst formerly manager for Media Irrigation Co. at Loxton. The family also lived at Renmark and Berri where Sgt. Obst was educated. He enlisted for the air crew in December 1941, being employed by the Berri Tarac company as a distiller. Sgt. Obst received his call up in November 1942. He commenced training in South Australia and later transferred to Victoria. He was promoted to sergeant, being transferred to another Victorian station. His training course was due to be completed in a few days.
The night when he met his death was the eighth anniversary of his marriage to Miss Verona Wilksch. In civil life Sgt. Obst who was 30 years of age, was a member of the Berri Brass Band, the Berri Rowing Club and the Berri Lutheran Church.
On Saturday 25th September 1943 at 2115 hours, an Avro Anson W2481, from 2 Air Navigation Sschool at Mildura, crashed 20 miles south of Loxton.
