Vernon William Semple was born at Strathalbyn South Australia on 20 July 1926. He was the youngest of seven children of William Henry Horace and Nellie Semple formerly James. 

Vern attended the Strathalbyn Primary and High School where he attained his Leaving Certificate. In 1943 he began his accounting career with the Adelaide Electric Company later the South Australian Electricity Trust where he remained, appart from his war service for 43 years.

He enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force on 23 November 1944 aged 18 serving as a Leading Aircraftman. He was discharged on 29 April 1946.

Vern married Barbara Rae Haskard on 6 February 1954. They had two children, Deborah Ann and Timothy James. They lived on Seaview Road Tennyson South Australia their entire married life. Barbara passed away in 2019 aged 87 and Vern in 2022 aged 95.
