Son of John Halford Sheppard and Minna Gertrude Sheppard, of Mount Gambier, South Australia.

A station overseer prior to enlistment, Sgt Sheppard volunteered for the RAAF Reserve in 1940 before enlisting in the RAAF on 4 January 1941. After training in Western Australia, Sgt Sheppard embarked for overseas service on 16 October 1941 from Sydney. He was stationed at Ayrshire, Scotland, and on 24 February 1942 whilst attached to 3 Radio School RAF, he was accidentally killed when his aircraft crashed on a beach near Turnberry, south of the Ayr Base. He was aged 28.
