Son of Herbert Leonard and Elsie Beatrice Highman, of Broadview, South Australia. Educated at Renmark High and Victor Harbor High Schools, he gained his Q.C. at school with credit and passed with credit (Intermediate) for book-keeping. He played football for Port Elliot and Payneham Methodist Church Clubs and was a life saver at Port Elliot. In civilian life he was an accountant for Nickrap Agencies, and from there enlisted in May 1940. He was called up in December 1940, gained his wings in May 1941 and left for overseas the same year. Sgt. Highman, while acting as Pilot of a Blenheim Bomber, lost his life as the result of an accident on the night of 13th June 1942 in the Middle East.
