Edgar's parents were John Bird and Margaret McIntosh Rankin. They lived at Truro Margate Beach, Redcliffe and Edgar attended Humpybong State School. As Edgar was under age his parents gave their consent to his enlistment at age 19 in May 1917. Edgar married Doris Randell Baker after his return in 1923 and was employed by the Queensland Public Service.
