Jack entered World War II by enlisting on February 13,1940 in Laverton,Victoria in the RAAF. His service number was 9068 and his discharge papers describe him as 5'6" tall, black hair, grey eyes, dark complexion, and with a tattoo on his left forearm.

During his six years in the air force he served as ground crew for No. 18 (Netherlands East Indies) Squadron (a joint Dutch and Australian bomber squadron of World War II).

He attained the following ranks:

Aircraftman Class 1 - 13 February 1940
Leading Aircraftman - 1 June 1941
Acting Corporal - 6 June 1941
Corporal - 1 February 1942,
Sergeant - 1 December 1942.

He was awarded the following war medals:

The 1939-45 Star
The Pacific Star
The Defence Medal
The War Medal 1939-45
The Australia Service Medal 1939-1945

He was discharged on 20 February 1946 due to demobilisation aftter the war.
