Son of Patrick James Quiirk and Mary Jane Quirk nee Pook of Redcastle, Victoria.

On 11 July 1918 Matthew married Catherine Morgsn in St. Mary's, Clayton-le-Moore, England. John Crombleholme officiated.

Commenced return to Australia on 16 April 1920 aboard HT Hororata with his wife and child disembarking on 10 June 1920.
