Corporal Alan Roydhouse (Service No:34383) enlisted in the AIF as a Gunner on 28 August 1916, having previously served in the Cadets and Militia (86th Infantry Battalion). Gunner Roydhouse embarked on 11 May 1917 from Melbourne for Devonport on board HMAT A11 Ascanius with Field Artillery Brigade Reinforcements. Gunner Roydhouse served in France with 10th Field Artillery Brigade and was promoted to Corporal on 24 May 1919. Corporal Roydhouse embarked for Fremantle on 22 September 1919 on board Port Sydney and was attached to 4th Divison HQ at Discharge on 12 December 1919. On 27 August 1940, Private Alan Roydhouse (Service No:W26199) enlisted with the ACMF and was attached to 5 Garrison Battalion at Discharge on 29 November 1940.

Born in 1894 in Adelaide South Australia, Alan was the second of three children of John Charles Roydhouse (b1868 in Wellington, New Zealand) and Grace Thomas (b1869 at Wallaroo Mines, South Australia). John (a Compositor) and Grace married in 1891 in Norwood, South Australia and by the early 1900s had settled in Perth where they raised their family and John worked as a Printer/Compositor and Grace was a Storekeeper. Their three sons served in the Military - Jack and Alan in WWI, and Alan and Noel in WWII.

Alan worked as a Civil Servant in Perth, where in 1917 he married Nellie Morris (b1895 in Petersham, NSW). Alan lived in Waroona where he was a Farmer until the mid 1920s, then in Perth where he was a Salesman and Agent. In the early 1930s Alan moved to Harvey WA where he was a Farmer before returning to Perth where he was a Life Assurance Inspector when he enlisted in the ACMF in 1940. Alan and Nellie were Divorced in Perth in 1945 - Alan had moved to Melbourne, where he was working as a Salesman in 1946 when he remarried Mary Olga Howson Prisk (b1894 in Melbourne, Victoria). Alan and Mary settled in Melboure where he was a Salesman until retirement in 1963. Mary died in 1965 and Alan in 1968.
