OBITUARY
Death Of Capt. H. S. Raphael
Capt. Howard Stirling Raphael, MLA, died suddenly in Sydney last Saturday. A member of an AIF dental unit, he was stationed in New South Wales waiting to go overseas and was on leave at the time of his death. Capt. raphael practised as a dentist in Victoria Park, WA and when he joined the AIF the business was carried on by his wife, who is also a dentist. He is survived by his widow and one son. Capt. Raphael was born in Adelaide in 1900 and was educated at the Pulteney Grammar School, Adelaide, Perth Boys' School, and St. Patrick's College. He was elected to the Perth City Council as a member of the Victoria Park Ward in 1924 and was for three terms chairman of the Electricity and Gas Committee. He also qualified as a health inspector. In 1930, he was elected Labor member for Victoria Park, WA in the Legislative Assembly, and he had held the seat continuously up to the time of his
death. 
Always interested in the Labor movement, Capt. Raphael was for some time a member of the State executive of the ALP. and represented the Shop Assistants' Union on the Metropolitan Council. He also took an active interest in the various organisations in Victoria Park WA. He enlisted in the last war in 1916, but was discharged as under age. He enlisted early in this war in a dental unit. Capt. Raphael was the youngest son of Mr and Mrs. J. G. Raphael,
of Unley. Two brothers, Ralph and Roy, live at Cumberland. Capt. Raphael's grandfather was a well known identity in Adelaide, and was for many years a member of the Adelaide City Council.
