"CAPT. W. P. DEVONSHIRE, D.S.O.
Capt. William Pendennis Devonshire, who has been made a companion of the Distinguished Service Order (the announcement and details of which honour appeared in the cable messages on Wednesday), is a son of Mr. W. H. Devonshire, of North Adelaide, and his home is at Harrington street, Prospect. He celebrated the thirty second anniversary of his birth on September 19. He was formerly a second lieutenant in the 78th Infantry Regiment, and, volunteering for active service early in the war, was sent away with a metropolitan battalion on May 31, 1915. After a period of training in Egypt his proficiency with the rifle earned him a place on Gallipoli in charge of a band of snipers, and he was mentioned in despatches for his work against the Turks. In his later sphere he was recently promoted to a captaincy. Capt. Devonshire married Miss E. M. Barnes, of Norwood, and has one son. A brother, Mr. Guy Devonshire, recently passed the examinations at Duntroon Military College, and was given his commission as a lieutenant." - from the Adelaide Register 29 Sep 1916 (nla.gov.au)
