Rothwell Oliver BARDER was born on 2nd January, 1890 Abbotsford, Victoria

His parents were Emil BARDER and Lucy McCOOL

Member of the Tumut Unity 39 Lodge

He had previous service for 5 years in the ATR and 5 years commissioned service before he transferred to the 20th Battalion, 8th reinforcements - Unit embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Aeneas on 20th December, 1915

Rothwell died on 18th September, 1916 at the 10th Casualty clearing station, Ypres Belgium of a fractured skull and wounds to left shoulder - he is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Belgium and also commemorated on the Australian War Memorial & the Balmain Rowing Club Roll of Honour

He was a Lieutenant with the 20th Battalion & was awarded the British War Medal & the Victory Medal

Lieutenant ROTHWELL O. BARDER, previously reported dangerously wounded, has now been ofllcially reported "died of wounds." He was in his 26th year, and before the outbreak of war was in business at Gilmore. He landed in France on April 2, and was in the Somme offensive. At Pozieres the company commander was wounded, and, as senior officer Lieutenant Bardor had the honor of leading his men in the charge. They captured trenches and maintained their positions. Although the date of his death Is not stated, he must have fallen in a subsequent engagement.

BARDER.- Died of wounds in France. Lieutenant Rothwell Oliver Barder in his 26th year, younger son of Mrs. & Mrs. Emil Barder, Helvetia, Huntleys Point and late of Gilmore near Tumut.

A good son who never gave his parents a moments trouble.
