Jones Ernest Tate 2757 15th Infantry Battalion
Ernest Tate JONES was born 3 Sep 1894 at Glamorgan, Wales. In March 1913, aged 19, he arrived in Brisbane on board the steamer Themistocles. His parents arrived in Sydney in May 1913 and moved to Tasmania not long after.
Ernest, also known as Harold, travelled to Tingoora and stayed with his brother Walter Jones who was a farmer there.
WW1 broke out in Jul 1914 and on 9 Aug 1915 Ernest, just a few days short of 21 years, enlisted in the Australian Infantry at Maryborough giving his brother Walter as NOK. Less than a month later Ernest was assigned to the 15th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement and his unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A33 Ayrshire.
By mid Nov 1915 Ernest was at Gallipoli with the 47th Battalion. He suffered with Influenza and was hospitalised in Ismailia, Turkey in Jan 1916.
He rejoined the unit but was hospitalised with influenza 2 months later at Tel El Kebir Military Camp, Egypt. When he re-joined the unit he was sent to France and hospitalized with Shell Shock (mild) at Boulogne in Sep 1916 when a letter was sent to his brother as NOK. A month later he returned to service, In Jan 1917 another letter sent to his brother as NOK advising that Ernest was dangerously ill with Pleurisy and transferred to England. He was discharged to furlough in Mar 1917.
It seems Ernest spent the next 18 months in the UK with several more bouts in hospital before being discharged and returned to Australia on 21 Dec 1918. He joined his parents and brother in Tasmania.
Ernest married twice and moved many times about Australia before finally settling at Coopers Plains, Qld. An article in the Courier Mail of 6 Mar 1943 stated: “Ernest Tate Jones, late of Orange Grove Road, Cooper's Plains.' Poultry Farmer, died on 27th February 1943 at Cooper's Plains.”
