Walter was the son of James and Ellen (nee Arbon) of Clements Gap.
Walter was born at Wokurna on 11 March 1898. A farmer, he was 20 years old when, with his parents consent, he enlisted in Port Broughton on 15 July 1918. He trained at Mitcham Camp but due to the cessation of hostilities he was discharged on 24 December 1918.
