Biography contributed by tony griffin

Frederick Bennier was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Bennier of Port Broughton.  Cyril was born at Port Broughton in 1894. A labourer, he was 24 years old when he enlisted on 21 January 1915.

Initially appointed to 8th Reinforcements 9 Light Horse Regiment Cyril embarked from Adelaide aboard HMAT  Morea on 26 August  1915. In Egypt he was taken on strength of 9th Light Horse on 28 December 1915. 9th Light Horse had only just returned from Gallipoli.

In August 1917 Frederick was one of 17 other ranks under command of a Lieutenant Hogan sent to the Railway Construction works at Kantara to cover a reconnaissance. 2 years of service in the Middle East finally took its toll and in February 1918 Frederick was admitted to hospital in Port Said with lumbago and again in September when he was struck down by influenza.

Frederick embarked for Australia aboard HT Pt Sydney on 4 March 1919 and disembarked in Adelaide on 5 April. He was discharged on 11 July 1919.
