On the 3rd of July 1878 Archie Albert Henry Evans was born in Norwood, and his pre-war occupation was a plasterer. Evans grew up in Norwood, SA, and followed the Church of England. Eva Victoria Evans was his wife who Evans wrote in his enlistment papers as next of kin, and that he would give 20% of his wages back to his family.
When Evans was 21 years old, he served as a private in the South African 5th contingent for 1 year and 110 days. The Boer War began on the 11th of October 1899, and ended on the 31st of May 1902.
On the 6th of January 1915, Evans was 36 years of age. This is also when he enlisted to fight in WW1, and lied about his age, stating that he was only 34 years old, to match the requirements for enlistment. When Evans enlisted, he was 5 ft 8 in, and had a chest measurement of 33.36 inches. He had brown hair and dark eyes and dark skin.
began training (Base Light Horse) on the 7th of January 1915, one day after he enlisted. However, Evans took his oath on the 16th of April 1915, 3 months after he began training in the unit. Usually, the soldier must swear his oath before beginning training with his unit or even fighting.
Evans was originally put into the 11th Light Horse Regiment but was moved to the 9th Light Horse Regiment before embarkation. After training with his unit Evans and the rest of the 9th Light Horse Regiment were taken on strength and embarked for Gallipoli on the 24th of June 1915, arriving 2nd October 1915.
Evans fought in the three battles of Gaza. The first commencing on the 26th of March 1917, the second commencing on the 17th of April 1917, and the third, the 31st of October 1917. He with the 11th, 9th, and 15th Light Horse Regiments, serving most of his time with the 9th Light Horse Regiment.
Evans got temporary promotion to first class private for 5 weeks. On the 11th of November 1918, Evans was moved to the 15th Light Horse Regiment, which is where he concluded serving for WW1.
After surviving the second Boer War, and WW1, Evans enlisted to serve in WW2 but was not recruited. On the 9th of November 1939, Evans was discharged, and he died 10 years later, on the 22nd of November 1949 in Adelaide.
